The polar night period is the time of year when the sun never rises above the horizon, resulting in 24 hours of darkness each day. It occurs only above the Arctic Circle and below the Antarctic Circle.

The length of the polar night increases the farther you go toward the poles. Even though the sun stays below the horizon, you may still get twilight (blue hour) depending on how far the sun dips below the horizon.

The polar night in Svalbard begins around 26 October and ends around15 February.
