Located high in the Arctic Ocean, Spitsbergen is the largest island of the Svalbard archipelago in Northern Norway. Stay in the world’s northerly town, Longyearbyen and experience the incredible polar night period, where the sun remains more than six degrees below the horizon. It’s a time where the incredible northern lights can be seen day or night and exhilarating winter activities take place under the glistening moonlight.
Day 1 | Arrive in Longyearbyen
Fly to Longyearbyen via Oslo. On arrival transfer to the fabulous Funken Lodge where you will stay for the next five nights. Perhaps take a stroll around the town before dining in the evening. Day 2 | Northern Lights Dog Sledding
Northern lights season is a particularly atmospheric time of year, and dog sledding under starry skies and dancing aurora is an experience not to be missed. Mush your own team of dogs under the polar night. Travel across icy plains and past towering mountains on this unique and special experience, looking for Mother Nature’s most famous lights show. Enjoy a hot drink and a snack in a log cabin before being returned to Funken Lodge to relax at leisure for the afternoon.
Day 3 | Electric Snowmobile Safari
Embark on a thrilling silent snowmobile journey through the wilderness, lit only by the polar night. The environment is home to Arctic wildlife including reindeer and polar foxes so keep a look out as your dash across the snowy landscape.
Day 4 | Northern Lights Snowcat Safari
Take an exciting trip by snowcat and hunt for the magical aurora in the Spitsbergen wilderness. Drive into the darkness through the frozen Advent Valley and admire the views back towards the flickering lights of Longyearbyen. Your knowledgeable guide will explain how the aurora is formed and will serve you hot drinks and share stories about the areas as you search for the colourful ribbons flickering overhead.
